At Toucan Education, innovation begins with regulation. Many neurodivergent children arrive at school already overwhelmed. When a child feels anxious or stressed, learning becomes secondary. Inclusive education therefore starts with safety, predictable routines and sensory awareness. Flexible seating, movement opportunities and calm transitions are not optional extras. They are essential foundations for progress.
An inclusive model also recognises that engagement looks different for every learner. Some children need movement to focus. Others require low demand tasks before accessing structured learning. Many benefit from multi sensory literacy teaching, short focused sessions and visual scaffolding. Innovation in education means adapting to the learner rather than expecting the learner to adapt to the system.
Within our Flexi School, inclusive practice is visible every day. Children attend part time alongside mainstream education and are supported in small groups with high staff ratios. Teachers are called by their first names, children wear comfortable clothing and they are supported to regulate in a way that works for them. This structured yet nurturing environment allows pupils to rebuild confidence and re engage with learning at a sustainable pace.
