As another academic year comes to an end, it is important to reflect on the difference Toucan Education has made to children, families, schools and local authorities across the North East.
Through our Flexi School, Alternative Provision and wider support services, we have helped children who needed a different approach to education. Many came to us feeling anxious, overwhelmed, lacking confidence or unable to engage fully in learning.
Over time, we have seen children begin to feel safe, build trusting relationships and believe in themselves again.

Supporting Children Through Flexi School
Our Flexi School provides a calm, nurturing and flexible learning environment for children who benefit from smaller groups, personalised teaching and a different pace of learning.
Throughout the year, we have seen significant growth in children’s confidence, resilience and engagement. Pupils who previously avoided adult-led activities are now remaining involved for longer periods, trying unfamiliar experiences and continuing when something feels difficult.
Our specialist literacy interventions have also supported excellent progress in phonics, reading, spelling and confidence in learning.
For many children, this progress is not only academic. It is about changing how they see themselves as learners and helping them recognise what they are capable of achieving.
Making a Difference Through Alternative Provision
Our Alternative Provision supports children with a wide range of needs, including school avoidance, anxiety, emotional regulation difficulties, communication needs and barriers to learning.
Relationships remain one of the greatest strengths of our provision.
Children are building trusting relationships with adults, developing genuine friendships with their peers and communicating with greater confidence. Many are learning to recognise when they need support and are beginning to choose appropriate strategies to help them regulate their emotions.
We have also seen children become more independent through community visits, travelling on public transport, ordering food, shopping, solving problems and developing everyday life skills.
These experiences give children the confidence to take greater ownership of their lives, make choices and advocate for themselves.

Progress That Extends Beyond the Classroom
Across our student reports, several important areas of progress have been consistently recognised:
- Greater confidence and self-belief.
- Improved emotional awareness and regulation.
- Stronger communication and social interaction.
- Increased resilience and flexibility.
- Greater independence in everyday situations.
- Improved engagement with learning.
- Measurable progress in literacy.
- A stronger sense of safety, belonging and happiness.
Perhaps the most meaningful change is that many pupils who arrived feeling anxious, withdrawn or unable to engage with education now genuinely enjoy attending Toucan Education.
They describe Toucan as somewhere they feel safe, understood and happy.
A Trusted Partner for Schools and Local Authorities
Toucan Education works alongside schools and local authorities to provide flexible and responsive support for children who need a different pathway.
As a trusted partner, we do more than provide a placement. We work collaboratively with professionals and families to understand each child’s needs, remove barriers and create a support package that can make a meaningful difference.
Our services can include Flexi School placements, Alternative Provision, literacy support, EBSA groups, community-based learning, Forest School, small-group provision and personalised interventions.
Every service is delivered by experienced staff who understand SEND, emotional wellbeing and the importance of building strong relationships before expecting progress.

Recognising the Toucan Team
None of this progress happens by accident.
It is the result of the care, patience, creativity and commitment shown by every member of the Toucan Education team.
Our staff notice the small steps that can lead to significant change. They adapt learning, build trust, celebrate progress and continue to believe in children even when those children may have stopped believing in themselves.
The positive outcomes achieved this year demonstrate what is possible when children receive the right support, in the right environment, from people who truly understand them.

Looking Ahead
As we move into the next academic year, Toucan Education will continue to strengthen its Flexi School, Alternative Provision and trusted partnership services.
We remain committed to working with families, schools and local authorities to ensure that children who need a different approach can access education that is flexible, personalised and built around their needs.
For schools and local authorities looking for a trusted provision partner, or for families exploring a different educational pathway, Toucan Education is ready to help.
